Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches participants researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Delegates in MUN are placed in committees and assigned countries to represent as a high-level government official of those countries. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then, debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the country they represent.
Delegate in a Model United Nations conference is a participant who represents a country other than their country of origin and deliberate on issues from the country’s perspective, and NOT from the delegate’s perspective or point of view. In other words, during the conference , a delegate will act as an accredited diplomat of the nation or organization they are representing and will debate upon the topic of the committee/council they will be placed in, while always respecting the Rules of Procedure.
